As you age, it is natural to worry about the state of your physical health. Most people realize their memory fades a bit over time, and names and places will not always be remembered easily. But what about your physical limitations? Many physical changes are to be expected as you age. You will shrink in height to a small degree, bones and joints may stiffen and movement may be restricted. However, physical aging is not necessarily something to be overly concerned about. Concerns over your physical health can be intimidating, buy there may be things you can do reduce the likelihood of being physically debilitated as you age.
It is important to remain active as you get older. Of course, this is easy if you've been in good health all your life. But even if you've had heart problems, joint problems, diabetes or other physical disease, you can still maintain a level of health as you age. If you can walk a few minutes a day, you can stay active. Staying active later in life doesn't necessarily mean you have to be an athlete. Walking is low impact and everyone can do it. You don't need special equipment. All you need is the initiative. Walking with a partner or friend makes it that much more fun. Swimming is also a great low-impact exercise that is actually beneficial to your joints and heart. Even if you can't swim, wading and treading water are great water activities.
It is critical to remain or get to a healthy weight. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is essential to maintaining physical health. Avoid processed foods and excessive amounts of sugary foods. Choose lean meats and low-fat dairy, and ingest some source of healthy fat -- like olive oil or walnuts -- every day. Maintaining physical health requires some work, but the rewards are many.
