Anti-Aging Diet

Eat foods that promote anti-aging

Proper nutrition and diet can allow a person to feel better inside and out. Everything from brain function to the five senses, as well as physical and emotional well-being, can be greatly aided through the consumption of healthy foods.

A diet complete with an array of vitamin, protein and carbohydrate-rich foods, in proper balance, will also have anti-aging effects on all parts and functions of the body. An anti-aging diet follows simple rules and is great for people of all ages.

Guidelines

The proper amount of food must be ingested based on age, gender and activity level. You should discuss your particular nutritional needs with a medical professional.

Aging is signaled both physically -- by wrinkles, sagging and increased disease risk -- and mentally, by memory loss. Foods that can combat any or all of these issues include:

  • Carbohydrates: Your main source of energy, carbohydrates are found mainly in breads and grains. Whole grains contain more fiber and nutrients than processed grains. Whole wheat and oats are great choices.
  • Fruits and vegetables: Full of fiber, vitamins and anti-oxidants, fruits and veggies make great side dishes and snacks. Look for those that are rich in color, including melons, berries, carrots and spinach. Bananas, due to their high potassium content, should be eaten in moderation.
  • Dairy: Calcium is extremely important for bone health. Yogurt, milk and cheese are excellent sources of calcium. Care must be taken to avoid excessive fat and cholesterol intake with these items, though. Foods such as kale, almonds and broccoli also contain healthy amounts of calcium.
  • Protein: Essential for muscle maintenance and body functions, protein is found in meats, fish, nuts, beans, seeds and dairy products. Sources of protein should be mixed and varied. Go for lean cuts of meat and healthy, fatty fish like salmon.

Precautions

While these guidelines apply for everyone, those with specialized diet requirements should take extra caution. Certain illnesses such as diabetes should be taken into consideration when creating a diet plan. Those with cancer or at risk of cancer may require organic meats, which are higher in protein and vitamins and lower in fat, in their diet. A medical professional or dietitian must be consulted.

For some, anti-aging diet may include trying new foods. Varying your diet is wonderful, but be mindful of any possible allergies you may have. When selecting foods, remember that whole foods are better than processed foods, which are often laden with sodium. The same is true of most takeout. Preparing food at home from fresh ingredients is the best way to eat healthy and fight aging.
